Help and advice

Why your AC freezes up in August

Ice on the line means the coil got too cold. There are only two common reasons for that.

First, turn the cooling off and the fan on. Let it run that way for two or three hours. The ice has to melt before anyone can test anything, including us.

Reason one: airflow. A dirty filter, a closed vent, or a crushed duct starves the coil. If your filter is grey, change it. That fixes it more often than people expect.

Reason two: low refrigerant. Low charge means a leak, because refrigerant does not get used up. Adding more without finding the leak is money out the window. We find it, then we fix it.

If it freezes again after a fresh filter and a few hours of thawing, call us. Running a frozen system can burn out the compressor, and that is the expensive part.
